What to expect on a Chichime Island stay in San Blas.

Chichime Island is a beach and overnight destination in Panama’s San Blas Islands, part of Guna Yala on the Caribbean coast. Travellers come for blue water, snorkelling, a welcoming social atmosphere and the chance to spend more time on the islands than a day trip allows.

Sea San Blas is 100% Guna-owned and has run trips in Guna Yala for more than 20 years. Your stay pays local captains, cooks and island hosts directly. Your hosts are the Guna family on Chichime Island.

Stay in a private or shared cabin and spend your days swimming, exploring the shoreline or relaxing by the dock, with one included excursion on your departure day. Shared meals offer time to meet other travellers, while the beach leaves room to slow down. Expect rustic cabins and shared bathrooms with basic showers that use treated water; the island and its surroundings are the centre of your stay.

Who it suits

Adults only (18+). Chichime suits travellers who enjoy simple island accommodation and a mix of activity and free time, including solo travellers who like a social island setting.

Before you go.

Is Chichime Island a good choice for solo travellers?

Chichime suits travellers who enjoy a social island setting. Shared cabins, communal meals and the included excursion create opportunities to meet other guests, with free time to enjoy the beach at your own pace. Solo travellers book a shared cabin, as private cabins are for 2 guests.

How many nights should I stay?

Stay as many nights as you like. Every stay includes one excursion, on your departure day, whatever the number of nights, so longer stays simply add more free time on the island.

How much does a stay on Chichime cost?

All rates are per person. A shared cabin costs — for 1 night, or — per night for stays of 2 nights or more. A private cabin, for 2 guests, costs — for 1 night, or — per night for stays of 2 nights or more. The Guna Border Fee is paid separately, in cash on the day of travel.

Are transport and boat transfers included?

Your package includes round-trip 4x4 SUV transport, with pickup and drop-off at your hotel in Panama City, and round-trip boat transfers between the port and Chichime Island.

Where can I be picked up and dropped off?

We pick you up and drop you off at hotels, hostels and Airbnb in and around Panama City. When you book, search for your pickup location and the booking system will tell you whether it’s inside our pickup area. Pickups from the Westin Playa Bonita or Dreams Playa Bonita cost an extra — per person. You can change your pickup location up to 24 hours before your trip; changes on the morning of the trip aren’t possible. After your trip, we can also drop you off at Tocumen International Airport, Albrook Airport or Albrook Bus Terminal at no extra cost. Just let us know when you leave the islands so we can arrange it.

Which excursion is included?

Every stay includes one excursion, on your departure day, whatever the number of nights. After lunch, the excursion boat collects you and your luggage, visits 2 to 3 islands plus the natural pool, then takes you directly to the port, arriving at 3:30 PM. Local staff confirm the details and times on the island, which vary with local logistics. Additional excursions cannot be purchased.

Can I add extras or add-ons after I book?

All extras and add-ons must be selected and paid for when you book. Once the day of your trip arrives, you can’t add or request any extras or add-ons.

Are snorkel masks provided?

Snorkel masks are provided during your excursion. At other times, island staff sometimes have some available; ask them once you are on the island.

Do private cabins have private bathrooms?

No. Private cabins provide a private sleeping space, but bathroom facilities are shared. Guests in shared cabins also use shared bathrooms, and the showers are basic and use treated water.

Are the showers fresh water or salt water?

Neither, exactly. The showers on the islands are very basic and rustic. The water is taken from the ocean and goes through an underground treatment process, then it’s pumped up to the showers, so it isn’t salt water, but it isn’t fully fresh water like you’d find in a hotel or city either.

Does a private cabin mean a private tour?

A private cabin refers to your sleeping accommodation. It does not mean you have exclusive use of the island or a private excursion.

Can children join this overnight experience?

No. This Sea San Blas overnight package is available to adults (18+) only.

Is there electricity, Wi-Fi and phone signal?

Generators provide electricity during the day, and the island staff can share the exact schedule. There is an area where you can charge your phone. Wi-Fi is generally available on the island while the generators are on, but once they’re turned off at night there’s no signal until the next day. Mobile signal varies a lot by island, location, time of day and weather, and phone reception in and around the islands is generally very weak.

Can I bring my own alcohol, drinks and snacks?

Yes. You’re welcome to bring your own alcohol, drinks and snacks for your stay. You can also buy drinks on the island, but options there are limited, so we recommend bringing your own.

What drinks are included with meals?

Each included meal comes with 1 drink: water, juice or soda. If you’d like more, you can buy extra drinks on the island.

Are there vegetarian or vegan options?

Yes. Island staff can prepare eggs with other foods such as rice, beans, potatoes, fries, salads and fruit, among other options. What’s available varies from island to island, so tell the staff your requests when you arrive. There are no vegetarian protein options such as tofu or soy products. Vegans can have a double portion of the sides, such as rice, beans and salad, in place of the chicken, meat or fish. We recommend that vegetarians and vegans bring their own snacks, food and drinks to have during and between meals.

Does late departure let me keep my cabin until the afternoon?

No. You must leave your cabin before 9:00 AM for cleaning. You can then enjoy the island until lunch, have your included lunch and then leave Chichime with your luggage for your included excursion and the port.

Here’s what to pack for your stay. There are no ATMs on the islands, so bring enough cash in US dollars.
