Where to Stay in Panama City, Panama: Areas for a First Visit

For a first visit to Panama City, choose Casco Viejo for historic surroundings , El Cangrejo for a central neighborhood base , or Avenida Balboa for time along the waterfront . An airport hotel makes more sense when your main priority is the next flight. If you are also visiting San Blas, choose your hotel and pickup arrangements together.

Compare areas by what you want from your stay

The official Panama City accommodation guide is a useful starting point for the city areas. Our recommendation is to compare exact addresses within your preferred zone before comparing room prices: two properties carrying the same neighborhood label can fit very different plans.

Casco Viejo: make the historic quarter part of your stay

Casco Viejo works well when you want sightseeing to begin outside your accommodation. Its plazas, historic buildings and cobbled streets lend themselves to exploring on foot. Restaurants and rooftop nightlife are part of the appeal, too. You can get a sense of the area from Visit Panamá’s Casco Antiguo guide.

Choose the room as carefully as the address. If you want an early night, ask whether it faces a bar, rooftop venue or busy street. A property that suits an evening out may need a different room choice before a dawn departure.

For luggage or mobility needs, ask about steps at the entrance, elevator access and where a vehicle can stop. These are property-specific questions; a neighborhood description cannot answer them. For a short visit focused on the old quarter, we would prioritize convenient access and a room that meets your sleeping needs over a longer list of amenities.

El Cangrejo or San Francisco: plan around everyday stops

El Cangrejo is worth considering if you want a central neighborhood base. San Francisco is another option when dining is a priority. Both feature in the tourism authority’s guidance on walking and getting around Panama City.

Try this before booking: mark the hotel, a breakfast option and two places where you would like to eat dinner. Check walking directions between them. That small exercise tells you more about the location’s usefulness than a general promise that everything is nearby.

If you plan to use the Metro, also check the walk to the station you would actually use. “Central” does not mean that a station is outside the door. For a two- or three-night stay, choose a base that supports your repeated journeys, then arrange transport for sightseeing farther away.

Avenida Balboa: choose the waterfront for walks

Consider Avenida Balboa when access to the Cinta Costera is a major reason for your hotel choice. The Cinta Costera is a public recreation area along Panama Bay, with walking space, bike lanes, gardens and lookouts.

Look beyond the room’s view. Check how you reach the waterfront from the building entrance and whether the accommodation has the facilities you will use. If a pool matters, verify that the room reservation includes access; if you want to prepare meals, check the actual kitchen equipment. A hotel room and an apartment can serve quite different needs even when their map pins are close together.

For families, weigh usable space, bed arrangements and access with a stroller against the attraction of a bay view. For a single night before an excursion, an easy departure may matter more than facilities you will barely use.

Should you stay near Tocumen Airport?

An airport-area hotel can be a sensible choice for a late arrival followed by an early flight. It is a different decision from choosing a base for exploring the city: Tocumen is east of central Panama City.

Before paying, establish how you will get from your terminal to the hotel and back. If a shuttle is advertised, check its operating hours, meeting point and whether you need to reserve it. Also make sure reception can accommodate your arrival time. “Airport hotel” alone does not settle any of those details.

With two or three nights available for sightseeing, we would usually choose a city base and plan the airport journey separately. With only a few hours to sleep between flights, prioritize the transfer and room access instead.

Is an airport hotel practical before San Blas?

Only if the onward pickup has been agreed. Do not assume that a nearby airport hotel and the airport terminal have the same pickup arrangements, or that either is automatically included in a city departure.

Choose your hotel around the San Blas departure

Our Cayos Limones Island Day Trip includes shared round-trip 4x4 and boat transportation, with pickup from a confirmed Panama City location scheduled for 5:00–5:20 a.m. Having both transfers included simplifies the island journey; the accommodation address still needs to work with the pickup arrangement.

Send us the hotel name and full address before committing to a nonrefundable room for that night. Once pickup is agreed, arrange access to the lobby or meeting point before dawn. If you will check out, settle the bill and key-return procedure the evening before.

The trip’s expected city return is 7:00–7:30 p.m. , subject to conditions. Keeping the same city room for a day trip gives you somewhere to shower and sleep afterward without another check-in. If your plan instead includes an island overnight stay, ask the city hotel about luggage storage between reservations; do not assume it is included.

Put one, two or three nights to work

One night: Let the next morning decide. Before a flight, focus on reaching the right terminal. Before San Blas, focus on a confirmed pickup address and a workable night’s rest. If the night is part of a city sightseeing stop, choose the area where you most want to spend your limited time.

Two nights: Keeping one base avoids spending part of the visit packing and checking in again. You could use the full day between those nights for the city or an excursion, depending on your arrival and departure times.

Three nights: One base can support a city day and a separate full-day outing. There is little reason to change hotels just to see another neighborhood unless the accommodation itself is part of the experience you want.

A final hotel shortlist check

Before choosing between two rooms, compare these practical details:

• Total stay cost: Include taxes, breakfast if needed, airport transport and any parking charges.
• Sleep: Check room position, air-conditioning and recent comments about noise.
• Arrival and departure: Match reception, check-in and checkout arrangements to your actual schedule.
• Access: Verify stairs, elevators, bathroom layout or other facilities that matter to your group.
• Location: Check the entrance and walking routes, not just the neighborhood name.
• Island plans: Agree on the pickup address and your room or luggage arrangements after the trip.
